A home Inspired by the Victorian Era.

Unwavering in me is a love of the Victorian era.

A fascination was formed in primary school when learning about Queen Victoria’s reign and the people who lived out their lives in that period. As a child, I conjured up notions of these “peculiar” beings who were of short stature and wore gloriously large skirts, with waist-cinching bodices and hobnailed boots. A time in which I never lived - but oh so wanted to, with any difficulties of the time were simply romanticized.

Victoria’s reign was a complex and multifaceted period marked by status, progress and challenges; It left a wonderful and lasting legacy in literature, architecture, and social norms that continue to influence culture today. My fascination with this era doesn’t stop with people and properties, it transcends across home decor of the time and has long since inspired the antique pieces I have around the cottage.

The Victorians were known for their love of an ornate and luxurious style - rich colour palettes such as burgundy, deep greens and royal blue, all of which brought a feeling of wealth and abundance to the home, particularly poignant at a time when social status was organized hierarchically.

As well as luxury, there was also a growing popularity in florals, patterned wallpapers, curtains and upholstery - a classic Victorian look.

Ways to inspire a Victorian feel in your home:

  • Antique furniture: Choose ornate, dark wood furniture with intricate carvings and details.

  • Decorative accessories: Add decorative elements like tassels, fringes, and lace to curtains and cushions.

  • Chandeliers: Crystal or brass chandeliers add a touch of Victorian elegance.

  • Victorian wallpaper: Consider using Victorian-style wallpaper with intricate patterns. Little Green has a fabulous range of 1900s Victorian-inspired wallpapers.

  • Vintage rugs: Use Persian or oriental rugs to add warmth and texture to the floors.

  • Parlour-style seating: Arrange seating in a conversational layout with plush armchairs and a sofa.

  • Fireplace mantel: If you’re fortunate to have a fireplace with a mantel, adorn it with decorative items and a large mirror.

  • Gilded frames: Display artwork and mirrors in gilded frames for a luxurious touch.

  • Turned wood candlesticks - a joyful addition to your table setting or console, candlesticks were a popular feature in Victorian times.

Remember, Victorian decor can be outlandish, so balance is key to avoid overwhelming the space. Choose elements that resonate with your personal style and create a cohesive, inviting atmosphere.
