A home Inspired by the Victorian Era.
Unwavering in me is a love of the Victorian era.
My fascination began in primary school, when I first learned about Queen Victoria’s reign and the people who lived their lives within it. As a child, I imagined these “peculiar” figures - small in stature, dressed in gloriously voluminous skirts, waist-cinching bodices, and hobnailed boots. It was a time I never lived in, yet so dearly wished I had, and any hardships of the era were easily romanticised in my young mind.
There is something endlessly inviting about period properties, don’t you find? A distinctive architecture that seems to hold a personality all of its own - these are the homes that make you slow your step and wonder about the lives once lived within.
The temptation to step inside and look around is irresistible - to trace the worn bannisters polished by countless hands, to pause by a sash window and imagine all those who had once done the same - unlike many modern houses, which have long since lost that sense of mystery and soul.
Victoria’s reign was a complex and multifaceted period, marked by status, progress, and profound change. It left a lasting legacy in literature, architecture, and social ideals - influences that still shape our culture today. My fascination with this era extends beyond its people and beautiful houses; it flows into the details of home life, inspiring the antique pieces that now fill my own cottage.
The Victorians were known for their love of an ornate and luxurious style - rich colour palettes such as burgundy, deep greens and royal blue, all of which brought a feeling of wealth and abundance to the home, particularly poignant at a time when social status was organised hierarchically.
There was also a growing popularity in florals, patterned wallpapers, curtains and upholstery - a classic Victorian look.
Ways to inspire a Victorian feel in your home:
Antique furniture: Choose ornate, dark wood furniture with intricate carvings and details.
Decorative accessories: Add decorative elements like tassels, fringes, and lace to curtains and cushions.
Chandeliers: Crystal or brass chandeliers add a touch of Victorian elegance.
Victorian wallpaper: Consider using Victorian-style wallpaper with intricate patterns. Little Green has a fabulous range of 1900s Victorian-inspired wallpapers.
Vintage rugs: Use Persian or oriental rugs to add warmth and texture to the floors.
Parlour-style seating: Arrange seating in a conversational layout with plush armchairs and a sofa.
Fireplace mantel: If you’re fortunate to have a fireplace with a mantel, adorn it with decorative items and a large mirror.
Gilded frames: Display artwork and mirrors in gilded frames for a luxurious touch.
Turned wood candlesticks - a joyful addition to your table setting or console, candlesticks were a popular feature in Victorian times.
Remember, Victorian decor can be outlandish, so balance is key to avoid overwhelming the space. Choose elements that resonate with your personal style and create a cohesive, inviting atmosphere.
