Autumn activity - How to make a gold leaf branch
After all, the trees have put so much effort into producing and nurturing their leaves throughout the summer that it seems a shame not to make use of them.
Recently, while upcycling an old mirror frame, I discovered Rub n Buff metallic wax paint and decided to experiment by painting some dried leaves I had gathered from the garden. The results were beautiful, so I wanted to share the process with you, so you can try making your own.
Steps:
Prepare Your Workspace: Find a well-lit area to work and lay down your paper or parchment to protect the surface.
Clean the Branch: If your branch is dirty or has any debris on it, clean it thoroughly and let it dry.
Applying Rub n Buff:
Wear protective gloves if desired
Squeeze a small amount of Rub n Buff onto a cloth or small paintbrush
Use your cocktail stick to hold the leaf against the surface whilst you carefully apply a thin layer of Rub n Buff
Repeat the process with the desired amount of leaves
Allow it to dry for a few minutes until it becomes tacky. Once the Rub n Buff has dried to a tacky state, use a clean, soft cloth to buff the leaves carefully - this will give a shiny, metallic finish. Rub until you achieve the desired level of shine
To stick the leaves to your branch, simply use a glue gun and apply small dabs of glue to secure the leaves into place
Let it Cure: Allow your gold leaf branch to fully cure for at least 24 hours before handling it or placing it in your desired location. Over time your gilded leaves may begin to curl but we think this makes them all the more joyful.
